Brace yourselves lovelies, it’s soap box time again and Momma is all fired up!
In Miami on Monday, the caregiver of an autistic adult was shot by police officers in the middle of the street.
Yes. You read that correctly.
The man, Charles Kinsey, works as a behavioral therapist at a group home. One of the patients there, a twenty three year old autistic man named Rinaldo, escaped from the home with a toy truck in his hand. Charles went after him to bring him to safety. The police were called by a concerned citizen that saw Rinaldo wandering the streets with what they thought was a gun. Charles and Rinaldo complied with the cops, getting on the ground. Charles has his hands up and explained who he was and that Rinaldo didn’t have a weapon, it was a toy truck.
The cops shot him anyway. After they shot him, they handcuffed him, instead of getting medical attention. Charles asked them why they shot him to which they responded “I don’t know.”
What in the actual fuck is going on here?
This story makes me angry on so many levels. The police had absolutely no grounds to shoot this man. He was just doing his job and trying to protect his patient. He cooperated with them fully and did everything they asked. He wasn’t resisting, he didn’t try to run away. He did everything right. The cops were wrong. And hopefully, they will be brought to justice.
Gun violence, racism and police brutality are hot button issues right now. Innocent people are being killed daily, both cops and civilians. And it’s just madness. Something has to change.
I hope that these cops are used as an example. They shot someone when it wasn’t warranted. Charles wasn’t a threat to them or anyone else. And responding with “I don’t know” is unacceptable.
Thankfully both Charles and Rinaldo are safe. As the mother of autistic children, I would be happy to have a man like him working with my children.
